She is the first woman, first African-American woman, and first South Asian woman to hold this position. Prior to this, Harris served as the Attorney General of California from 2011 to 2017 and as a United States Senator from California from 2017 to 2021. Throughout her career, Harris has been an advocate for criminal justice reform, climate change action, and access to healthcare.

Joe Biden selected her as his vice-presidential running mate, and they won the election, making her the first woman, African-American, and Asian-American vice president of the United States. On July 21, 2024, Biden announced he would not seek a second term and endorsed Harris for president.
